What is the Link Between Candida and Nail Fungus?

Candida and nail fungus are two things you probably wouldn’t associate with each other. Scientists have discovered a link between the two. Candida does have a connection with nail fungus, and is the main cause in this context. The benefit of discovering this link is if you have a problem with nail fungus you know what you need to do to treat it. Read on to find out more about this connection and how it can be eliminated in the easiest way.

What is Candida?

Candida is a type of organism which lives on the skin of all human beings. Normally, they don’t bother anybody and have no negative effects on the human body, or on any of its functions. Occasionally, though, these organisms are prompted by some force to grow. When they grow out of control they can cause so many different problems, which is where nail fungus comes into play. The specific strain of organism here is known as Candida albicans, and when they grow out of control it’s commonly referred to as a yeast infection or candidiasis.

What Are the Problems?

Candidiasis is where the Candida albicans become dangerous. Sometimes the yeast infection can infect the blood stream and shut down the vital organs of the body, although this is extremely rare and normally only afflicts people who already have serious medical conditions. Most of the time, they cause treatable problems which don’t cause anything more than a lot of irritation. Here are some of the most common problems:

Vaginal thrush.

Penile thrush.

Bloating.

Nail fungus.

Eczema.

Headaches.

Nail fungus is the main problem being focused upon here. It’s certainly a lesser result of a yeast infection, but it’s a troublesome one nonetheless. This condition normally develops with people in very specific fields. The website of the National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom outlines this:

“Occupations that involve a lot of handwashing, or having your hands in water a lot, are often the cause of fingernail infections.”

As is obvious, this is because people in these professions will have damaged skin due to the excessive contact, which leaves little holes for the candida to penetrate.

Why Does Candida Lose Control?

The candida in the body loses control of their growth processes for many reasons. Normally, it’s regulated by the defences of the body. If too much grows the body removes it naturally without any harm caused. The website of CNN, in conjunction with the MayoClinic explains the main cause of infections:

“Oral thrush and other candida infections occur when your immune system is weakened by disease or drugs such as prednisone, or when antibiotics disturb the natural balance of microorganisms in your body.”

Only when the defences of the body are strong enough to push back the tide of candida can the bodily balance resume as before. It’s why doctors often prescribe specific medicines to help combat particularly bad infections, although most of the time the problem will simply leave on its own.

Symptoms of a Yeast Infection

A yeast infection is spotted through very specific symptoms. Some of the problems caused by the infection are hard to pin down, since they are also associated with a number of other diseases, so you have to be careful when attempting to perform a rough diagnosis. These are the main symptoms of a candida infection:

Red rash. An infected piece of skin will show a great deal of redness and could weep periodically.

Tiredness and a poor level of concentration. These symptoms will be quite sudden.

White patches, which in some cases may look like cottage cheese, on the tongue, penis/vagina, or in the folds of the groin.

Pain when urinating.

These symptoms can be misdiagnosed for other more serious diseases, so it’s always worth going to a doctor in the event of a possible yeast infection.

Symptoms of Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is relatively simple to notice as there are very few other diseases which present exactly the same symptoms. Below are the main symptoms of this issue:

Around the nail will be a painful red area. In some cases, fluid may begin to leak from the area.

The nail bed will be yellowed, which is a sign of inflammation from a foreign substance.

It’s not uncommon to have the nail separate from the nail bed completely; eventually it will fall off.

Dullness and significant discolouration of the nail is a sure-fire sign of the fungus.

Treatment of Nail Fungus

Treating the problem is about treating the yeast infection. In most cases, the fungus itself can be ignored because the thing sustaining it is the candida. Kill the candida and the fungus will die alongside it. Your local doctor might be able to give you something to relief the irritation, but ultimately it’s about regulating the amount of candida inside and outside your body.

Diet is the main way to prevent candida from growing too much. Through eating healthily and preventing too many refined foods entering the body the level of candida can be regulated. It’s impossible to completely remove the organism, but you also wouldn’t want to do such a thing. Paul Pitchford in his 2003 book entitled Healing With Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition talked about the same issue and stated:

“Healing candidiasis with diet alone is possible but takes patience and consistently good eating habits.”

The book also mentioned how foods like kelp and other natural sugars can help to prevent yeast overgrowth. Your immune system is at the centre of everything. With a strong and healthy immune system yeast infections will be a thing of the past. Taking advantage of fruits and vegetables with strong antioxidant levels is the way to treat the looming issue of candida overgrowth. Again, nail fungus won’t be a problem because candida is the source of the infection in the first place.
